evaluating the efficiency of plantago ovata and starch in water turbidity removal

چکیده
in the current study, the efficiency of starch and plantago ovata extract as coagulant aids is compared in water turbidity removal. the coagulant is ferric chloride and the experiments are run in two ranges of ph 7 and 8. the achieved results of turbidity removal in different turbidity levels of 100, 50 and 20 ntu caused by different concentrations of starch and p.ovata as coagulant aids besides ferric chloride as the main coagulant are compared. according to the achieved results, the use of p.ovata or starch as the coagulant aid may play a key role in reducing the amount of fecl3 as the main coagulant and consequently decreasing the generated sludge. furthermore, the remarkable turbidity removal efficiency gained when these coagulant aids are used in comparison with the case when no coagulant aid is introduced is also of interest. generally, the both coagulant aids seem to be more efficient in ph value of 7 rather than 8. although both coagulant aids used in this study manifested acceptable turbidity removal efficiencies, p.ovata showed higher capabilities of removal in different turbidity levels and ph values in comparison with starch.

Plantago ovata is a medicinal plant of plantain, Plantaginaceae, family used to treat intestinal disorders and stomach diseases. P. ovata grain has relieving effects and healing inflammation and irritation of the mucous layer of stomach and duodenal ulcer. Beside the medicinal benefits, this plant is useful for water turbidity removal. Coagulation and flocculation are important processes in wat...
متن کاملEvaluating the Efficiency of Tragacanth Coagulant Aid in Removing Colloidal Materials and Suspended Solids Creating Turbidity from Karun River Water
Introduction: Colloidal materials and suspended solids cause turbidity in water. To remove turbidity, clarification method is used that includes processes of coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation. Due to the long duration of coagulation process, coagulant aids are applied. Despite the favorable efficiency of synthetic polyelectrolytes as a coagulant aid, due to their harmful effects on h...

Background and Objective: Access to safe water is critical for protecting human health. Turbidity is one of the main physical parameters that affect the quality of water from both health and aesthetical points of view. Therefore, waters should be treated based on the standards set for turbidity before consumption. This study was performed to determine the performance of a bench-scale baffled fi...
متن کاملModeling and Optimization of the Coagulation–Flocculation Process in Turbidity Removal from Aqueous Solutions Using Rice Starch
Natural coagulants have received much attention for turbidity removal, thanks to their environmental friendliness. The present study investigates potential application of rice starch for removal of turbidity from aqueous solutions. It considers the effects of four main factors, namely settling time (40-140 min), pH (2-8), slow stirring speed (20-60 rpm), and rice starch dosage (0-200 mg/L), eac...
